Police Issue:  Email dated 9/10/2010

Hi all,
Sorry I have not been on this machine in days.... back issues:(
This was sent to me so thought I'd share it. The layoffs have begun around the state.Once again, Stillwater is ahead of it's time.
Tonight @ the STTA meeting there will be representative from the NJSP speaking on neighbor watch /keeping communities safe etc. etc.
We are our brothers keeper. The recent rash of robberies is a wake up call for us NOT to be complacent . Thank GOD for our STATE POLICE in solving this so quickly! They have the resources that we NEVER would have had otherwise!
When we had the robberies over a yr ago here w/ a 24/7 PD.... they WERE NOT SOLVED! REST assured we ARE COVERED! over the last several days I have been around Stillwater and LO-and BEOLD! there they were again... 2 troop cars on patrol!
I have been sucked back into this issue via a coward calling the Herald a few wks. ago. The frightening part of this,is in working with the State Police we were told to QUIETLY gather information.... AND NOT to scare off the perpetrators.
The idiot that called the Herald could have very well foiled the investigation and capture of the thieves! I question the REAL MOTIVE of the caller to the paper!???!!!  Are they trying to instill fear in the townspeople????Discredit the township committee???
The time now is to UNITE as a community for the betterment of all!
If my back is ok I hope to see you @ tonight's STTA meeting @ the town Hall 7:30 pm.
Have a great day!!!!!

This is my reply since, as it turns out, this email was actually FOR me, unbeknownst to me at the time....  9/13/2010

     Hello All.
I have been meaning to answer this email but haven't had the time.  I would have liked to have gotten the email out to you sooner, for instance before the STTA meeting, so that you wouldn't be going in there with misinformation.  I'm sorry that I didn't have time to save you from yourself.  Next time.  This email and the ensuing call that I received telling me that I was the focal point of a "rant" at the STTA meeting makes your statement below that you've been "sucked back into this issue" sound like you've really come out of retirement to beat the little people back into submission.
Somehow, your telling of the story of how these crimes got solved did not jive with the other account I heard.  I was told, "If anyone tells you the state police solved this crime, they are wrong!"  When your email came in, I sent your email over.  Their reply was, "Her head is really up her XXX!"  I think that you should know that while you are raucously vocal, you are also wrong.
Below you say something about cowardly idiots calling the newspaper, and interestingly, someone told me that you were referring to me.  I saw a half license plate plus a description of the car all over facebook a couple of days before this was solved, so I don't know how you equate that with "quiet".  I didn't post it on my facebook but I read it on my facebook.  I don't know where it originated and at the time I figured it came from someone who saw the car because otherwise, how would it be out there?  I guess someone wanted the thieves caught and caught fast.  I'm told that facebook, in part, helped to solve the crime.  I was told that those posts, which spread like wildfire, ended up going to someone who recognized the car.  That person got involved with the Sheriff's department, the state police were notified....Sparta police were called and the crime was solved ultimately.  I don't understand how any of the Herald articles related to the potential for foiling the capture of these criminals but I guess you know.  I'd be interested in knowing what state police officer said that "my call" to the Herald was something that put this case in jeopardy.  Or is that just your take?
I have always wanted a police department in Stillwater.  I did years ago when it was saved from extinction the first time.  I felt the same way this time around and I feel the same way now.  I came home from vacation to find the NJ Herald stacked neatly on my counter and the first one I read had you quoted saying something about the people in Stillwater being hunters or the hunted.  While you might have been implying that you wanted to be your brother's keeper, the parlance of that statement conjures up more than a shred of fear for me.  I am harkening back to a day when Vic stopped me while I was tailing my kid out on a 10 mile run to tell me that someone in my neighborhood shot at some people breaking into his car and to tell my kids to be careful where they wander in the Paulinskill Lake neighborhood because people are hot and trigger happy.  Read this article. A kid was shot in Texas under just those circumstances. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/060308dnmetfrosch.5439de4a.html
My husband pointed out something that hadn't dawned on me at first about your email.  In one breath you advocate for a neighborhood watch which means sharing information ie: the facebook post.  In the next breath, you say that you don't want the Herald being given information which broadens the audience.  You want to be judge and jury on what information should be shared, and when, and how and with whom.  Do you realize your contradictions?
I know that you think your statements about being the hunter or the hunted are benign and for you, they might be.  You might have sense enough not to shoot before you know....but there are other, crazier people out there who won't.  I think a bit of caution when you speak would be good.  Everything does not need to be inflammatory and attention grabbing.  I also don't think that the word "berserk" used in that article was fair either.  "Berserk" is a derogatory word to point at people who are fearful about criminals breaking into their homes.  There are lots of old folks, young families, and people who live alone in town who are probably quite fearful that someone will intrude into their home and hurt them.  When a very real threat presents itself, such as this one where we had numerous break-ins occur in a short span of time, it's terrifying for some people.  That doesn't mean they are "berserk".  Their feelings are worthy of validation.  The "berserkians" are just regular folks who live differently than you.  Leave them alone.
True, I don't live far from 94 and my house isn't hard to find and I did have an "emergency" and the state police were great.  I'm not slighting them.  I liked the Stillwater police better and I liked knowing that they were on patrol.  That's it....no more, no less.  It's not "the same" because the state police wouldn't know me and wouldn't stop me, as Vic did in the case above, to let me know what I should know about my neighborhood.  Their method of policing was more like "community policing" and we will never be able to measure what could have happened but didn't because of their presence in town.
I was also told that now that we don't have police, we've had several alcohol related accidents in town because drunken people are driving through here to get where they need to go.  That came from a fireman....  So the trouble with not having a local police department is multifaceted...
"Discredit the township committee"....  They made the decision to get rid of the police department.  If they get a call from the newspaper for comment about a rash of burglaries in town, they are simply being held accountable for their decision.  They can answer questions and they don't need a defense team.  I'm not getting my stradivarius out to play for them.
     I'll leave you with that....
